The Chardham circuit is not a difficult journey because of its distance. It is difficult because of what the distance is made of: mountain roads, altitude, and days of sitting in a vehicle on gradients that do not forgive a weak back or a tired heart.
Ten days, or two
By road the circuit takes ten to twelve days. By helicopter it takes two to three. For a pilgrim in their seventies or eighties, that difference is frequently the difference between making the journey and deciding, quietly, not to.
That is the honest reason most families call us. Not luxury, and not speed for its own sake. A parent who wants to see the shrines while they still comfortably can.
What the helicopter does not change
The weather decides. Mountain flying operates in windows, and when the window closes, nothing opens it — not a schedule, not a booking, and not what anybody paid. A day can be lost to cloud and it will not be given back.
Altitude reduces what a helicopter can lift, which is why weight is asked about and why the answer matters. And some walking remains. The helipads are not inside the temples, and there is ground to cover on foot or by pony at more than one of them.
Anyone selling certainty at this altitude is selling something else. The mountain sets the schedule, not the operator.
Who it is really for
It suits pilgrims who cannot manage ten days of mountain road, families travelling with elderly parents, and anyone whose leave will not stretch to a fortnight. It suits people who would rather arrive at the shrine with something left in them.
It is a shorter journey, not an easier faith. People have been walking to these temples for a very long time, and the helicopter changes the travelling, not the arriving.
