Questions
Questions, answered properly
Most questions about flying privately in India get a vague answer, because a vague answer is easier to give. Here are the direct ones — including the ones about cost, and the ones where the honest answer is that it depends, and here is what it depends on.
Booking
Booking and process
What happens between the first call and the aircraft door closing.
How do I book a private jet in India?
Send the route, dates, timing and how many are travelling — by telephone, WhatsApp or the enquiry form. We return an itemised quotation, usually the same day. On confirmation we file the flight plan and arrange clearances and slots, and you send passenger names and identification. Reporting is twenty to thirty minutes before departure at the private terminal.
How quickly can a private jet be arranged?
For a domestic sector on our own aircraft, often within a few hours of confirmation. What decides it is crew duty limits, slot availability and clearances rather than the aircraft itself. International sectors take longer because overflight and landing permissions have to be obtained. Call the desk and you will get a realistic timeline before committing to anything.
Is there a membership or joining fee?
No. There is no membership programme, no joining fee and no minimum spend. You charter when you need to and you pay for that flight. Anyone asking for money before there is a flight to pay for is selling you something other than a flight.
Can I change or cancel a booking?
Usually yes, subject to crew duty limits, slots and whether the aircraft has to be repositioned as a result. Cancellation terms depend on how much notice you give and are set out on the quotation before you confirm — not afterwards, and not on request.
What documents do passengers need?
Government-issued photographic identification for domestic sectors, with names matching the booking exactly. Passports and any applicable visas for international flights. We confirm the precise requirement in writing with your itinerary, because it varies by destination and it is the one thing that cannot be fixed at the aircraft.
How early do I need to arrive at the airport?
Twenty to thirty minutes before departure for a domestic sector. Longer for international flights, where immigration and customs apply. There is no public terminal queue and screening is conducted for your party alone, which is where most of the time saving in private aviation actually comes from.
Cost
What it costs, and why
The questions most operators answer vaguely, because a vague answer is easier to give.
How much does it cost to charter a private jet in India?
Charter is priced by flight time and aircraft type, not per seat. The figure reflects the aircraft, the length of the sector, positioning, ground handling, catering and applicable taxes. A short domestic light-jet sector and an international mid-size sector are entirely different numbers, which is why a published price list would be misleading. Send the route and you get a quotation.
What should a charter quotation contain?
Aircraft type and the operator of record, flight time by sector, positioning, ground handling and landing fees, catering, and applicable taxes. Anything excluded should be stated as excluded. A single undifferentiated number is not a quotation — it is a figure you cannot check, and you should ask for it to be broken down.
What is positioning, and why am I paying for it?
If the aircraft is not already where you are departing from, it has to fly there empty first, and that flying costs money. We show it as its own line so you can see it. Routes where the aircraft is already in the right place cost less, which is why timing sometimes moves the price more than distance does.
What is an empty leg, and is it cheaper?
An empty leg is an aircraft repositioning without passengers. If one matches your route and timing it can be considerably cheaper. The trade-off is that it is fixed: the timing cannot move, and if the booking that created it changes, the empty leg disappears with it. Ask the desk what is currently available rather than planning around one.
Is chartering cheaper for a group?
Per person, often yes. The price is for the aircraft, so it divides across the party. For six or seven people on a route where the scheduled connections are expensive or awkward, the comparison is closer than most people expect — particularly once a night in a hotel at one end is counted in.
Operator
Licensing, operators and safety
How to tell who is actually flying you, which is not visible from a website.
Is CAF a licensed operator or a booking agent?
CAF holds a Non-Scheduled Operator Permit issued by the DGCA and operates its own aircraft under it. Where a journey needs an aircraft outside our fleet we source it from operators we work with directly, and the operator of record is named on your quotation before you confirm rather than discovered at the airport.
What is a DGCA Non-Scheduled Operator Permit?
An NSOP authorises a company to operate aircraft commercially in India on a non-scheduled basis. Holders are subject to DGCA oversight of their operations manual, maintenance programme, crew training and record-keeping. It is the licence that separates an operator from an intermediary, and brokers do not hold one.
What is the difference between an operator and a broker?
An operator holds the permit, operates the aircraft and carries responsibility for the flight. A broker arranges flights operated by other companies and sits between you and whoever is actually flying. Both models are legitimate. What matters is knowing which one you are dealing with, and who the operator of record is.
Is private jet charter safe in India?
Charter is regulated by the DGCA, which licenses operators, approves maintenance programmes and sets crew training and duty requirements. In practice safety depends on whether you are flying with a permit-holding operator, and on whether that operator will tell you plainly which aircraft and which crew. Ask. A good operator answers without hesitating.
What should I ask any charter operator before booking?
Five things. Do you hold a DGCA permit, and what is the number. Will I fly on your aircraft or one you are sourcing, and who is the operator of record. When was this airframe last inspected and when is the next due. Are the crew type-rated, current and inside duty limits for my itinerary. And what insurance is carried.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We watch conditions from the evening before and call you with options — a revised departure time, an alternative airfield, or a postponement. We do not depart into conditions the crew is not comfortable with. No charter fee changes that, and an operator who suggests otherwise is telling you something important about how they work.
Aircraft
The aircraft and where it goes
What aircraft does CAF operate?
A Cessna Citation CJ II, registration VT-MON, based at New Delhi and operated under our own DGCA permit. It is one aircraft rather than a fleet, which means we know its maintenance history and its crew. For requirements outside its capability we source from partner operators, always naming who they are.
How many passengers fit on a Citation CJ II?
Up to seven, plus crew.
How far can the CJ II fly?
Approximately 1,450 nautical miles, varying with passenger load, fuel, temperature and field elevation. From New Delhi that covers Mumbai, Bengaluru and Bhopal non-stop with comfortable margins. Longer sectors are flown with a technical stop, which we will tell you about at the quotation stage rather than on the day.
Can a private jet land at any airport in India?
No. Access depends on runway length, operating hours, fuel availability and permissions. A light jet reaches considerably more airfields than a larger aircraft, and that is frequently what makes a destination viable at all. We confirm suitability before quoting rather than after you have paid a deposit.
Can you arrange international flights?
Yes, subject to aircraft range, overflight and landing permissions, and customs and immigration clearance at both ends. International sectors need more lead time than domestic ones — permissions are granted on somebody else's timetable, and no amount of urgency at our end changes that.
Can you arrange a larger aircraft than the CJ II?
Yes, through operators we work with directly. If a larger aircraft is genuinely the better answer for your journey we will say so rather than sell you ours. An operator with one aircraft and an interest in filling it is exactly the operator you should expect this answer from, so it is worth stating.
Air ambulance
Medical transfers
If this is happening now, telephone the desk rather than reading. The number is on every page.
How quickly can an air ambulance be arranged?
Domestic arrangements can usually begin within hours. Departure then depends on aircraft and medical team availability, clearances, and the patient's condition and stability for flight. Call the desk — it is staffed around the clock and will give you a realistic timeline immediately rather than an encouraging one.
What does an air ambulance include?
The aircraft, a medical escort appropriate to the patient's condition, in-flight medical equipment as required, and ground ambulance at both ends so the transfer is bed to bed. Permissions and clearances are handled as part of the arrangement. What is appropriate is decided with the treating clinician, not by us alone.
Can a family member travel with the patient?
Usually one attendant, subject to the aircraft, the medical configuration fitted and weight limits. It is confirmed when the transfer is arranged, because the medical equipment carried determines what space and payload remain.
Can you transfer patients internationally?
Yes, subject to aircraft range, permissions and clearances at both ends, and whatever medical documentation the destination country requires. International medical transfers carry more paperwork than domestic ones and the paperwork is often the critical path, so tell us early if the destination is outside India.
Helicopter
Helicopter and the yatra sectors
General answers below. Anything specific to a season or a sector comes from the desk, because it changes.
How do I book a helicopter for Kedarnath?
Call the desk with your dates and the number travelling, including ages and weights. Those are needed for load planning at altitude rather than for administration. We will tell you what is available for your dates and how the booking is made, because the arrangements for the Kedarnath sector change from season to season and last year's answer is not reliable.
How long does the Chardham yatra take by helicopter?
Two to three days by helicopter against ten to twelve by road, which is the reason most people ask. The exact itinerary depends on the operator, the season and the weather window available on your dates. Ask the desk what is running for the dates you have in mind rather than planning to a published schedule.
Is there a weight limit for helicopter passengers?
Yes. Helicopters carry a reduced payload at Himalayan altitude because thinner air gives the rotor less to work with. Passenger weights are collected in advance and used in the load calculation for each sortie. It is a safety requirement rather than an administrative one, which is why it is asked at booking and not at the helipad.
What happens if weather cancels a sortie?
The sortie waits. Mountain flying has a weather minimum and it is not negotiable by anybody, including the passenger who has paid for it. Itineraries in the hills are built with contingency for exactly this reason. Cancellation and refund terms are set out in writing before you confirm, and they are worth reading.
The company
About CAF
How long has CAF been operating?
Since 1984 — over four decades across charter, aircraft transactions, technical services and regulatory support. The charter side is the part most visible to private clients, but it sits on an operations business that was there long before it.
Who does CAF work with?
Private clients, corporates and institutions. The client list has included the Border Security Force, Indian Railways, the Directorate General of GST Intelligence and Air India. Institutional work is procured on documentation and compliance rather than on presentation, which is a useful thing for a private client to know about an operator.
Where is CAF based?
Ground Floor, 8/123, Mehram Nagar, Delhi Cantonment, New Delhi 110037. The aircraft is based at New Delhi. Visits are welcome by appointment — call ahead so the right person is there rather than arriving and hoping.
Does CAF do anything besides flying?
Yes. Aircraft sales and acquisition, components and spares, flight clearances, technical support and manpower, maintenance coordination and regulatory liaison. Most of the company's history is in that work, and it is the reason the charter operation is run the way it is.
